12:55 pm - SAVE THE DATE
It looks like we'll be having a luau July 18th.  I truly hope you can be there.

Beware the post that looks like an invitation.  This is really a shout out to gardeners.  Is there any interest in forming a garden / house work group?  I have a lot of tidying to do.  I was hoping we can form a labor group and work round-robin in our gardens, yards, or house projects.  For example, we have made amazing strides in our yard (front and back) but there's still more to do before a party (remove the last of the blackberries, possibly pull down a snag, pull up a rhodie, decide where a keg would go best).  I am thinking half a day and if people came I'd still be glad to have a BBQ (and shamelessly ask the boys to cook over the flame).  In turn I'd give another half a day to a different household.  Perhaps you need major shrubbery cut or a new plot dug, or I dunno, house painting or whatever.  Hell, if you feel like working but don't have a large yard I will make an extra set of adirondak chairs (delivery in one month) and yes, they are FABULOUS.  Is anyone interested?

9:38 am - MIKE LIGHTS PARADE
Oh, that's supposed to be BIKE LIGHTS PARADE.  I like the slip though.  I'm leaving it.
http://www.eugenecelebration.com/bike_lights_Parade.html
This will be the third year of bikes lighting up in new and fantastic ways and parading about.  I think we should do it.  More importantly, I think Mike could help us make them fabulous!  Eh?  Mike?

5:25 pm - personal and professional networking sites
so, I joined fb in order to report back on it's professional network implications to the commission.  How do you all decide when and where to post?  That is, what unwritten guidelines do you follow to decide if you post in lj or fb?  And how the hell does one separate personal friends from professional networks?

5:37 pm

On March 6th (this Friday) Lane County is sponsoring the Project Homeless Connect event at the Lane Events Center at the Fairgrounds. Last year, 1,158 "homeless and at risk of being homeless" guests attended and event co-chair Commissioner Pete Sorenson anticipates even greater attendance this year.

The one-day, one-stop event invites citizens who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless, to come and receive basic necessities and services to help them move out of homelessness. Guests are offered free medical, dental and vision checkups, hot meals, haircuts and giveaways of basic provisions. Information on housing, employment, schools, and services available for youth, families, seniors and veterans is also provided.

But,

a
variety of donations are still needed for this year’s event. Organizers are seeking coats, sleeping bags, backpacks, hats, gloves, socks, children’s clothing, canes, crutches, hand sanitizer and other personal hygiene products.
So, if you have extra coats, sleeping bags, childrens' clothing, what-not that you can donate feel free to drop them off at my house anytime until Thursday night.  I will be translating in the medical stations for the day and have been collecting shtuff as I can.  I'm such a chiona (crybaby/wears her heart on her sleeve) that I'm worried about how I will react to all the homeless families.  I have so much - even when/if I'm robbing Peter to pay Paul - and my heart just breaks for kids.  I almost don't want to do this because I don't have the protective barriers around my heart when it comes to children.  I know I'll take their faces home with me and it makes me cry.  :(  If I win the Lottery I'm going to buy an apartment complex and install social workers who teach parents how to pull themselves out of poverty cycles in order to provide a stable life for themselves and their children.  I guess it would take several caseworkers, considering all the reasons families find themselves homeless in the first place.  sigh

2:07 pm - Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all my bloggy friends!

I’ve been spending a little time in another blogging community and someone posted an interesting challenge that I thought would be fun for us to do here as well. It’s a toughy, but see what you come up with:  Describe your entire life in a single paragraph of 100 words.  No more than 100 and no less than 100. It must be exactly 100 words.

I'm working on mine and will post when done.

4:23 pm - perspective
I reread these articles and comments regularly.  It has been just 6 weeks since Obama's election but it feels like so long ago as I look ahead. I was reminded that time has a different perspective to my elders. This morning I was reminded that my lense on diversity, equity, and cultural competency is so small compared to a senior (who happens to be lilly white and gay)  in my department.  Born in the 40's he has seen more than he will share and fights for the rights of others, always pushing the envelope of comfort to get the message across.  He won tickets to the inauguration last night and could not wait to tell me this morning.  I am so happy for him I cried.  As did he.  He let me know he feels as if 30 years of waiting for others to catch up will be exorcised when he attends - in person! - the inauguration of our next president.

5:00 pm - Thoughts to Ponder....

What if the presidential candidates exchanged race?

Think about it...Would the country's collective point of view be different?

Ponder the following:

What if the Obama's had paraded five children across the stage, including a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?

What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?

What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was divorced?

What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after she was severely disfigured in a car accident?

What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married?

What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?

What if Cindy McCain had graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five?

(The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989,

igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)

What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

What if Obama couldn't read from a teleprompter?

What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes?

What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management problem?

What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distribution?

What if the Obama's had adopted a white child?

You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?

This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

10:02 am - swap and craft day
I want to formally invite you to my shop for a jewelry & tool swap and general craft day Saturday November 22 from 11 am until 4 pm.  I believe the followsing guidelines will prove helpful.  One must bring something in order to trade.  If I have a sparkly bangle I see on Fulana's pile I need to offer something in return.  If I want a set of clippers from Mike then I aught to have something he will find of like value.  I am gearing up for the holiday season and have already made a batch or two of this and that as well as a few other items.  If you want to drop in and craft that day please bring your shtuff and maybe a bar stool.  ALL cobwebs are gone from the two biggest work areas in the main area of the first floor of the shop and it's ready.  I have already spent hours upon hours out there beading and crafting and dreaming.  I thought about potlucking it but am not sure how that will go.  Let me know your thoughts please.  I think I may do this 2 more times before the end of the year.

Marquis' team finished their season by winning the Kids Bowl. It was without a doubt the closest game they've played all year. Unitl the last quarter the score was 6 - 0 Fern Ridge. Then there were interceptions, recoveries, and two break away 70 yard runs that led them to a 13 - 6 final score. OMG, it was so tense. I was taking pictures of everyone with M1 then at night it was called to my attention that I wasn't in any of them. sigh. Just like a mama.

I don't know wtf is going on with the posting ability.  sorry for the mess.  I just want to share.

OMG, we made it to the end of football season!  I can't tell you what an emotional, financial, and time investment this season was.  Truly, don't ask when/if your turn comes and your child wants to play.  I will do it again next year if he chooses to play but it's a serious resource line item.

4:44 pm - election
My stomach is tied in knots.  I'm so nervous I'm almost weeping.  I'm going in to work tomorrow wearing my
Drunk Mamas if Obama loses.  (drunk mamas are sunglasses so big they cover most of your face.  Your children can't see your eyes or the circles underneath if you're hung over but it will be because I've been crying)

As children we're told we can do/be anything but we believe it about as much as we believe it when our 'rents tell us we're beautiful or handsome.  It may be true for some of us but we know when it doesn't apply.  No kid of color believes they can be president.  Not when you fear DWB (driving while brown), not when 1 in 3 American black men over the age of 35 are in prison, not when there are almost no people of color in the GOP at all.  I feel like Obama will win but I'm afraid to hope.  I'm afraid to believe and invest my emotions in another election where the people speak but the election has been stolen.  Aahhhrg, Christ, I feel sick to my stomach.

12:25 am - I put that on...
So, you all know how I fight isms, and am in fact PAID to fight isms ... by the gub'mnt, but I was just listening to Letterman drum McCain and Paul says, "You know, she is a hottie." and I snorked because it's true.  It's all she's got going for her.  I wondered about the sexism but ... nope, that's all she's got.  sigh.  Hell, _I'd_ make a better veep.  I put that on!

8:14 pm - happy memories

In the book I'm reading this guy talks about his happiest memory.  He's got it down to the minutes, let alone day.  It's a beautiful memory and I pulled away at the end of the paragraphs, thinking of my own.  I've had a good life so far and I've got plenty of happy memories.  There are a few, though, that are crystalized into perfection.  I think we change the past with how we wanted it to be when we replay the memories but there are some so perfect they don't need guilding - even by accident.  I know it's not my happiest but the most recent was my birthday.  I still choke up just a little when I see in my minds eye the line of boys sitting on the curb, shoulder to shoulder, watching Cody and Mike light fireworks.  All the boys sitting there are mine.  My brother, my boys, and their friends whom I'd claim as my own. The youngest  Bowlsby I held when he was less than an hour old.  I remember wanting a camera but maybe it's better this way.  It's a perfect memory that still makes me cry with its beauty.  They will all grow and change except in that perfect snapshot in my mind.  Once again, C&M, thank you for that.

And now I'm curious.  What was your most recent happiest moment?

9:49 am - Unattainable love
I have a new love.  Alas, it will never belong to me. It’s an electric chipper owned by Mr. Patrick.  I love the sound it makes as it eats up the blackberry vines and spits out black and green mulch.  I love the different smells as I chip; fresh blackberry vines smell like blackberries, dried ones smell like Nana’s beans en la holla (oy-ya, pot), holly doesn’t have much smell at all but apple branches smell light and fresh.  It’s amazing how huge piles of organic matter mulch down to just a few wheelbarrows full.  Sunday I spent most of the day in the back yard mulching and chipping – from 11 am until 4:30 pm with a few rests but no big breaks for lunch or anything.  My body is uncomfortably sore but I relish the slight bruised feeling because I know how much I accomplished and how good it is for me.  Ahhh, I love garden machines - especially the vintage ones.  Old machines are invincible with a little TLC.  To me they seem more solid and unpretentious.  They’ve been used by other families and loved and taken care of if they’re still around.  I love the worn paint, how the green fades to an army fatigue color, or the red on the 1970’s rototiller fades to a barn red, and the orange of the clippers (thank you Mike!) isn’t neon anymore but a dusky sunset color.  It’s as if they mellow out to compliment to colors of my garden.  The colors become more real, more natural, with age.  And I’m never worried that the extra mochaccino attachment is going to break off and ruin the look of my keeping-up-with-the-Jones’ Smith and Hawkins’s Hemi powered V8 riding lawn mower.

1:47 pm - photos
So yesterday I received an e-mail from CAlC (community alliance and all) saying:  Thank you for applying to appear in CALC's upcoming photo exhibit on the Mixed Race Multiracial Multiethnic Experience. We would like to include you in the exhibit and schedule you for a photo session.   Sweet!  The boys and I are to be featured with 29 other families in a photo spread.  super cool!  It's a little thing but I can't wait and am looking forward to the end result.

10:50 am - OCF
It's that time again. OCF. I'm packing it all in tomorrow and staying through Monday when I'll help pack it out. Inayity will watch the boys until Friday am (my mommy is coming Thursday night, Goddess bless her). I received a _last minute_ phone call from my Mary saying that two people flaked out so I called Mamie, who squealed with delight and is coming along. I've been so busy lately that only yesterday did I begin to plan. You know, for the weeklong camping trip in another day or two. I've made 3 lists and keep leaving them around. I won't forget the glitter tho'. I realized that I've written it 2x on my current list. Ice, tp, chonies? who cares? Glitter? Check. I'm sad that I'm leaving the boys behind. Usually it's not even a blip on my radar because they're with their dad during this time. But this year they'll be 20 miles away and I won't see them for 5 days. chachi sad. BUT my mom is taking them out to the fair and I'll hang out with them all day. I've got a big grin on just thinking about them.
Thank you all for making the time to hang out with me on Saturday. I had a great time and loved the company. Oh, the gifts and cards were so lovely, don't get me wrong. Gergnome hasn't come to work with me yet. I keep finding new and funny spots for him to hang in the house. I LOVE my plant book. I found a great section on plants to give your enemies! Made me lmao. And the hedge trimmer? perfect.
Did anyone catch the line of boys sitting on the curb? Did anyone get a picture of that? It was soooo cute and I was distracted on my way to get the camera. Small Paul was to the far left, then Michael, Evan, Marquis, Isaac, Joe, etc. until Julian. They were all in a line by size, smallest to biggest boy (yes, my brother is included in that) watching the fireworks, and totally into it. That will be one of those snap shots in my memory for all time. Thank you Cody and Mike for producing the opportunity for a beautiful memory. And thank you for knowing that mister pacifist was trying to get a point across and not actually going for firearms. The intensity cracked me up because he was all tense and this great wordsmith lost his finesse when stressed out. And then back into the kitchen she, I mean he went. I think all around it was an idyllic evening.

current mood: excited

4:13 pm - B-DAY
I have been so wrapped up in work and end-of-the-year school activities that I forgot to post! Please come to my house to celebrate my 35th birthday with me this Saturday July 5th from 6:30 pm until you leave. Some family and little friends will be there (ages 1 if Arthur comes to 14 when the Bowlsby's come). I will gladly serve heavy snacks and refreshments.
